Flyability Specialist Paragliding Course, July 2003 - in conjunction with the Keswick Calvert Trust

In brief:
This course is designed for people with physical disabilities including visual impairment. Using specially designed flying equiment and radio contact in flight, this allows everyone, including wheelchair users to fly solo after the initial tandem flight training. *This price is dependent on fulfilling the basic criteria for a Flyability scholarship worth up to £300, which will be awarded automatically for people with disabilities on this course.
In detail:
Flyability and the Calvert Trust have been working together for several years with the aim of promoting and providing paragliding opportunities for people with disabilities.
In our most recent joint venture we are offering specialised paragliding student pilot courses to people with disabilities. Organised by the Calvert Trust and run in association with the 'Peak Para' paragliding school, these courses have been designed to make use of the various designs of Flyability paragliding buggies and other specialist equipment as and when needed.
In addition the Calvert Trust will be providing additional resources and support that would not normally be available at every paragliding school.
In recognising that these specialist services carry an extra cost and accepting the fact that people with disabilities sometimes have lower incomes and higher living costs, Flyability has made a commitment to subsidise the cost of these courses.
In a broadening of the current Flyability Scholarship Scheme this means that we will be happy to make a grant of £300 per course candidate as a contribution to their pilot training costs. To take advantage of this subsidy all you need to do is to complete the Flyability Scholarship application form and return it with your course application to the Calvert Trust. In confirming your course booking the Calvert Trust will liaise with the BHPA registered paragliding school to complete the lower part of the form.
On receipt of a completed scholarship form and on commencement of your paragliding course Flyability will make a payment of up to £300 to 'the school' to help cover the cost of your pilot training. Once your booking has been accepted by the Calvert Trust you can assume that you have been granted a Flyability Scholarship worth up to £300.
Along with Flyability, the Calvert Trust has been at the forefront of pioneering developments to enable people with disabilities to fly paragliders. The Calvert Trust owns a dual canopy with paragliding wheelchair to enable either tandem or solo flights for wheelchair users.
The Calvert Trust also has access to a variety of scenic Lake District flying sites.
Paragliding Course Cost per person is £345* for people with disabilities and £410 for able-bodied.
Monday 7th to Saturday 12th July 2003 * This price depends on a Flyability scholarship worth up to £300 being awarded. This will be allocated to participants on this course who have a disability and who have not previously received a Flyability scholarship.
The participants will cover the theory and practical requirements to attain the BHPA Student Pilot Certificate. Teaching begins with tandem flights to acquire the ground and canopy handling skills, progressing to solo flights. These courses are run by a BHPA registered school in conjuntion with ourselves to ensure both the quality of instruction and that the appropriate equipment modifications are available for the individual participants.
The course fee includes food and accommodation at the Calvert Trust, paragliding instruction, and all equipment with BHPA temporary membership and insurance. Numbers are limited to a maximum of six, so please book early to reserve your place.
